South Sudan 2017-19 Home (ATHIU #19) Jersey/Shirt

£29.99

This is an AMS Clothing South Sudan national team 2017-19 home jersey featuring the name and number of star striker Kenjok ‘Kenny’ Athiu.

The South Sudan national team played their first international match in 2012 and despite having almost no footballing infrastructure as well as a squad comprised of mostly players from the domestic league, they have shown considerable promise. South Sudan’s breakthrough achievement was reaching the Quarter-Finals of the 2015 CECAFA Cup, where they defeated Djibouti and Malawi in addition to drawing twice against Sudan who later knocked them out on penalties. With their youth teams displaying immense potential as well as a large number of professional players from their diaspora that could be called upon, the future looks bright for South Sudan.

Kenny Athiu is one of the highest-profile footballers to ever represent South Sudan at international level, with the 28-year-old most recently playing for Australian A-League powerhouse Melbourne Victory. Athiu began his club career playing in the 3rd tier of football in Australia, before making his mark at 2nd tier club Heidelberg United, where he scored 43 goals in 74 matches between 2015-2018. His impressive form attracted the attention of many A-League clubs and eventually he joined Melbourne Victory on loan in 2017, with a solid run of performances earning him a permanent contract at the club. After much expectation, he was finally called-up to the South Sudan national team for the 2022 World Cup qualifiers in September 2019 and in his debut, he played a major role in South Sudan’s 1-1 draw against Equatorial Guinea in the 1st leg of qualifiers. He has now played a total of 7 matches of South Sudan and will form a core part of the Bright Stars squad over the coming years.
