Due to their small size and population of only 2 million, The Gambia had rarely achieved much international success, until their breakthrough Africa Cup of Nations qualification in 2021. Prior to this, they had never qualified for a major tournament, however defied all expectations to reach the quarter-finals of AFCON 2021, defeating continental heavyweights Tunisia and Guinea in the process. With their current squad featuring a host of young players competing in Europe, it is expected that results will continue to improve over the coming years.
Yankuba Minteh is one of Africa’s most promising young attacking talents, with the 21-year-old having already displayed his immense potential at the highest level of club football. Minteh began his senior club career with Gambian club Steve Biko FC, debuting for the club in the top tier of Gambian football in the 2021-22 season. Following a successful trial, Minteh began his European career with Danish club Odense Boldklub in 2022before earning a move to Newcastle United in 2023. He spent the 2023–24 season on loan at Feyenoord, where he gained significant top-level experience in domestic and European competitions. In 2024 he joined Brighton permanently for a reported fee of £30 million and has performed strongly, scoring 7 goals in 37 matches in all competitons of his debut season at the club. At international level, Minteh hade his debut for the Gambia national team in 2022 at the age of 18 and has already established himself as a key member of the Gambia squad. He has scored 7 goals in 19 matches for the national team and played every match in their 2023 AFCON campaign.
