Despite experiencing widespread political instability in recent years, Libya have defied the odds and achieved some of their best results during this time. Their greatest achievement was winning the 2014 African Nations Championship (CHAN), where they upset Ghana in the final. They later finished in 4th place at CHAN in 2018, losing the semi-final 3-1 in extra-time to eventual winners Morocco. In addition, they have qualified for the Africa Cup of Nations on three occasions- in 1982, 2006 & 2012, with the team finishing runners-up as hosts of the 1982 edition.
Ali Elmusrati is currently one of Libya’s most prolific footballers and one of the few players in the national team to be playing at an elite level outside of North Africa. Elmusrati began his club career with local giants Al-Ittihad Tripoli, debuting for the club in 2013 at the age of 17 and soon established himself as one of the most promising young players in Libya. In 2017 he signed with Vitória S.C. of Portugal’s Primeira Liga and after impressing over two seasons with their B team, he made his first team debut in August 2019. Elmusrati made an immediate impact and scored his first goal for the club in December 2019 in a UEFA Europa League match against Eintracht Frankfurt. In January 2020 he was loaned to Rio Ave for the rest of the season and was then signed on a four-year deal by Portuguese giants S.C. Braga in July 2020. At international level, he has played 40 matches for Libya’s national team and has scored twice. He debuted for Libya as an 18-year-old in the 2014 African Nations Championship, being a key member of the team that won Libya’s first major title.
