Al-Merrikh SC compete in the Sudan Premier League and are based in Omdurman, the most populated city in Sudan, lying on the western banks of the River Nile, opposite the capital, Khartoum. Al-Merrikh is one of the oldest football clubs in Africa and was founded under the name of Al-Masalma Sporting Club in 1908 before being renamed as Al-Merrikh (the Arabic word for the planet Mars) in 1927. Along with arch rivals Al-Hilal, Al-Merrikh are one of the two most successful clubs in Sudan, having won the league title on 21 occasions. In recent years, Al-Merrikh have had the edge of their rivals, winning the past three consecutive league titles in addition to the most recent Sudan Cup in 2018. The club has won the Sudan Cup a record total of 15 times since it began in 1990 and won 17 Khartoum League title prior to their withdrawal from the regional league in 1997. At continental level, the club has also achieved success, with their best result being a runner-up finish in the 2007 CAF Confederation Cup, losing to Tunisia’s CS Sfaxien in the final. Al-Merrikh also reached the semi-finals of the 2015 CAF Champions League, being defeated by eventual champions TP Mazembe 2-4 on aggregate.
Seifeldin Malik is currently one of the premier strikers in Sudanese football and has played a key role in the recent success of both Al-Merrikh and the Sudan national team. The 27-year-old began his senior club career in 2015 with local side Al-Hilal Merowe, based in the city of Merow in the Northern State of Sudan. After impressing in his debut season, Seifeldin was signed by Al-Khartoum SC and performed strongly over three seasons, with his breakout season coming in 2017 in which he scored 10 goals as well as earning a call-up to the national team. In 2018, Seifeldin was signed by Al-Merrikh and played a key role as they won three consecutive league titles in his first three seasons at the club. Seifeldin was a key part of the Sudan national team squad that qualified for the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations, scoring several crucial goals in their qualifying campaign, including the opening goal in their 2-0 victory against South Africa to seal Sudan's place in the tournament. He has now scored a total of 8 goals in 22 matches for Sudan since his first cap in 2017.
