Al-Merrikh SC compete in the Sudan Premier League and are based in Omdurman, the most populated city in Sudan, lying on the western banks of the River Nile, opposite the capital, Khartoum. Al-Merrikh is one of the oldest football clubs in Africa and was founded under the name of Al-Masalma Sporting Club in 1908 before being renamed as Al-Merrikh (the Arabic word for the planet Mars) in 1927. Along with arch rivals Al-Hilal, Al-Merrikh are one of the two most successful clubs in Sudan, having won the league title on 21 occasions. In recent years, Al-Merrikh have had the edge of their rivals, winning the past three consecutive league titles in addition to the most recent Sudan Cup in 2018. The club has won the Sudan Cup a record total of 15 times since it began in 1990 and won 17 Khartoum League title prior to their withdrawal from the regional league in 1997. At continental level, the club has also achieved success, with their best result being a runner-up finish in the 2007 CAF Confederation Cup, losing to Tunisia’s CS Sfaxien in the final. Al-Merrikh also reached the semi-finals of the 2015 CAF Champions League, being defeated by eventual champions TP Mazembe 2-4 on aggregate.

Ramadan Agab has been one of Sudan’s top footballers in the past decade and has played both as a center-forward and attacking midfielder throughout his distinguished career. The 35-year-old began his club career with Omdurman-based club Al-Nesoor in 2005, however it wasn’t until his stint with Al-Mourada SC from 2009-2012 where he established himself as a leading player in the league. His strong form led to a move to Al-Merrikh in 2012 and also a place in the Sudan national team squad for the 2012 Africa Cup of Nations. Since 2012, Agab has remained at Al-Merrikh, where he has become a legendary figure, having been involved in 5 league titles and 4 Sudan Cup titles while at the club. In recent years he has played mostly as a striker after beginning his career as an attacking midfielder and he was joint top-scorer in the 2019-20 league season. At international level, Agab has been a key member of the Sudan national team squad since his debut in 2010 and has scored a total of 6 goals in 43 international matches for the ‘Falcons of Jediane.’
