Al-Ahly Benghazi compete in the Libyan Premier League and are based in Benghazi, the second-largest city in Libya. The club was founded in 1947 and is the most supported club in Benghazi, known for their passionate, loyal and sometimes violent crowds. Al-Ahly have won the league title 4 times, with their most recent title coming in the 1991/92 season. The club often suffered during the Gaddafi era, with tensions coming to a head in 2000, with fans complaining that Saadi Gaddafi (the son of president Muammar Gaddafi and head of the Libya FA) had conspired with FA officials to ensure that Al-Ahly would be one of wrong side of refereeing decisions. After continued protests from fans, Gaddafi ordered the Al-Ahly training ground and team offices to be destroyed in addition to giving the club an indefinite ban. Al-Ahly didn’t return to the field again until 2005, however they have since become one of Libya’s strongest clubs and finished second in the most recent league season.
