This is a Puma Togo national team 2024-25 home jersey featuring the number of star defender Alaixys Romao.
Togo had rarely achieved much international success until the late 1990s when they became a regular qualifier for the Africa Cup of Nations. They made history by qualifying for their first appearance at the World Cup in 2006, when they shocked Senegal to finish on top of their qualifying group. Despite losing every match at the World Cup, they performed admirably in a tough group that included South Korea, Switzerland and France. Since then, they have not reached the same level of success, however in 2013 they did achieve their best-ever finish at AFCON when they reached the Quarter-Finals.
Alaixys Romao is one of the most notable figures in the history of Togolese football with the 41-year-old centre-back having had a remarkably enduring career at both club and international level. Romao was born in France to Togolese parents and began his senior club career in 2002 with Toulouse B in the 4th tier of French football. He made his breakthrough into the French top tier with Grenoble, where he played for three seasons from 2007-2010. From there he had stints at fellow Ligue 1 clubs FC Lorient, Olympique Marseille and Stade Reims as well as two seasons with Greek giants Olympiacos, where he was a key player in their 2016-17 league title. In his later years, he was moved back to Greece, having stints with a number of clubs across the 1st and 2nd tiers of Greek football. At international level, Romao is the most capped player in the history of the Togo national team, having made 97 appearances since his international debut in 2005. He was a member of the Togo squad in their historic appearance at the 2006 FIFA World Cup as well as at four AFCON tournaments, and remains an important member of the current Togo squad.
