Sudan is one of the oldest national teams in Africa and were one of three teams to compete in the inaugural Africa Cup of Nations in 1957. Their greatest achievement was winning the 1970 Africa Cup of Nations on home soil; however, they have achieved little success since then. From 1976 until 2008, they did not qualify for AFCON, yet in 2012 they saw a resurgence by making it through to the Quarter-Finals. Sudan have also performed well at the African Nations Championship, finishing 3rd in both the 2011 & 2018 CHAN tournaments. Sudan’s relatively strong domestic league has been somewhat of a hindrance for national team development with top players almost never leaving the local league to seek a higher level overseas, however this is beginning to change as a growing number of Sudanese footballers have signed with foreign clubs in recent years. Sudan returned to the African Cup of Nations in 2021, recording impressive victories against South Africa and Ghana to secure their first AFCON qualification since 2012.
Mudathir El Tahir has been one of the most prolific strikers in Sudanese football since his breakout few seasons at Al-Nil Al-Hasahesa from 2006-2008. He then transferred to Al-Hilal in 2009 and in his 10 seasons as the club he played a key role in the dominance of the league, where they won the title 7 times during his spell at the club. In 2018 after facing pressure from the next generation of strikers at Hilal, Mudathir made a much-publicised move to emerging club Al-Hilal SC El-Obeid. In addition, Mudathir has 51 caps for the Sudan national team and most notably scored twice in the 2012 Africa Cup of Nations as the Falcons reached the quarter-finals.
