Orkney is an archipelago in the Northern Isles of Scotland comprised of 70 islands (20 of which are inhabited) and a total population of 22,100. The Orkney Amateur Football Association, an affiliate of the Scottish Football Association, is the governing body of football in Orkney and organise the local leagues, representative teams as well as Orkney FC, a club team that competes in the North Caledonian League. Orkney’s representative team have a long history, with their first match being played against Shetland in 1919. They often compete in the biennial Island Games football tournament, with their most recent appearance in 2017 seeing them finish in 9th place overall. They also play an annual inter-county competition against Caithness and arch-rivals Shetland.
