Despite their consistent participating in a range of competitions, Luxembourg’s only significant achievements have been competing in 6 Olympic football tournaments between 1920-1952. In the 1952 Olympics, they shocked Great Britain with a 5-3 win in the preliminary round before losing to Brazil 2-1 in the next round. After decades of struggling to compete against their larger Europeans rivals mostly due to a limited talent pool, Luxembourg pulled off a massive 0-0 away draw to eventual champions France in the 2018 World Cup qualifiers. In 2023, Luxembourg achieved some of their best results in European Championship qualifying, finishing third in their group (of six teams) and qualifying for a play-off for a finals berth, but they lost 2–0 to Georgia.
Leandro Barreiro is one of the most talented young footballers to emerge from Luxembourg in the past decade. The 24-year-old came up through the youth ranks of Bundesliga club Mainz 05 and eventually was signed to their senior team, where he made his debut in 2019. Barreiro soon became a key player in the Mainz squad in the 2019-20 season and remained at the club for 6 seasons until his contract expired at the end of the 2023-24 season. After attracting interest from major clubs throughout Europe, he signed with Portuguese giants Benfica in May 2024. Barreiro was born in Luxembourg to Angolan parents and made his debut for Luxembourg’s national team in 2018 at only 18 years of age. He has since played 61 matches for Luxembourg and is set to be one of their keys players for many years to come.
