Indonesia has long been one of Southeast Asia’s most passionately supported national sides, often playing most home matches to sell-out crowds of over 70,000 at Jakarta’s Gelora Bung Karno Stadium. Indonesia was the first team from Asia to participate in the FIFA World Cup, with the predecessor of the team (prior to independence in 1945), the Dutch East Indies, participating in the 1938 edition, where they were eliminated in the first round. Indonesia qualified for the AFC Asian Cup on five occasions, and advanced to the knockout stage for the first time in the 2023 tournament, exiting in the round of 16. Despite the massive popularity of football in Indonesia as well as a well-supported domestic league, the poor state of football administration in the country has largely prevented Indonesia from fulfilling their huge potential, however this appears to have greatly improved in recent years. Led by PSSI chairman and influential businessman Erick Thohir, the level of investment into football has increased and a program to target members of the Indonesian diaspora overseas has seen a rapid rise in the strength of the national team. With a squad now comprised of players from both the domestic league and some of the top leagues in Europe, the national team has suddenly become arguably the strongest in Southeast Asia and were the only team from the region to progress to the final round of 2026 World Cup qualification, where they narrowly missed out on reaching the tournament.
Beckham Putra is one of Indonesia's brightest attacking talents and has spent his entire senior career with his hometown club Persib Bandung, having progressed through the club's youth academy before making his first-team debut in 2019. Beckham played a key role in Persib's recent domestic success and has established himself as one of the standout creative players in Indonesian football. After representing Indonesia at youth level, he made his senior international debut in 2025 during the country's successful FIFA World Cup qualifying campaign and has since become a regular member of the national team, having scored 2 goals in 8 matches for Tim Garuda.
