Ethiopian Coffee (more commonly known locally as Buna) are arguably Ethiopia’s best-supported club and also one of Africa’s most popular, with the team almost always playing in front of packed crowds and having an estimated 6 million fans throughout the country. Unlike many in Ethiopia, the club are owned by their fans, a contrast to most other local clubs, which are owned by corporations. Despite their huge popularity, they have only won the Ethiopian Premier League title twice since they were founded in 1976. These title victories came in 1997 & 2011, with the club also winning the Ethiopia Cup 6 times- most recently in 2024.
Amanuel Yohannes has emerged as one of Ethiopia’s most promising young players and the 25-year-old has already established himself as a regular member of the Ethiopia national team squad. He has played for Ethiopian Coffee since joining their youth ranks in 2015 and made his debut for the senior team in 2017, where is now a key part of their midfield. At international level, Yohannes has won 38 caps for Ethiopia since making his debut in 2018.
