Representing a territory of around 40,000 people, the British Virgin Islands are one of international football’s smallest teams, with a FIFA ranking that has ranged from a high of 160 in the early 2000s to a low of 209 in 2022. Recent years have brought encouraging progress, highlighted by eliminating the US Virgin Islands in 2026 World Cup qualifying, a narrow 1–0 defeat to Jamaica and victories over the Cayman Islands, Bahamas and Anguilla. The squad combines locally based players with a growing contingent from the lower levels of the British football system, while several teenagers have also established themselves at senior level. Although still among CONCACAF’s developing nations, improved youth development and diaspora recruitment have made the BVI increasingly competitive against their Caribbean peers.
