This is a Macron Benin national team 2024-25 home jersey featuring the number of star striker and captain Steve Mounié.
The Benin national team played their first international match in 1959, shortly before the formal independence of the country in 1960 and became a FIFA member in 1962. The team was previously nicknamed Les Écureuils (The Squirrels) before rebranding to Les Guépards (The Cheetahs) to reflect a more competitive identity. Benin has qualified for the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) five times — in 2004, 2008, 2010, 2019, and 2025. Their best performance came in the 2019 edition, when they reached the quarter-finals after eliminating Morocco in the Round of 16.
Steve Mounié is one of the leading players in the current generation of Béninoise football and has a prolific club career playing in some of Europe’s top leagues. The 30-year-old began his senior club career with French Ligue 1 club Montpellier. After initially struggling to break into the senior team at Montpellier, Mounié went on loan to Ligue 2 club Nîmes, where he had a strong season and upon returning to Montpellier for the 2016/17 season, he established himself as the club’s leading striker with 14 league goals. This caught the attention of newly-promoted English Premier League club Huddersfield Town, who signed Mounié for a club record fee of €13 million. He played two seasons for the club as they competed in the Premier League and after they were relegated back to the Championship, he remained at Huddersfield for one more season. In September 2020, Mounié returned to France and joined Ligue 1 club Brest, where he performed strongly over 4 seasons before joining Bundesliga club FC Augsburg in July 2924. After international level, Mounié has formed a key part of the Benin squad since making his debut in 2015. He has scored 20 goals in 62 international matches for ‘Les Écureuils’ and played every match in their AFCON 2019 campaign.
