The Western Isles (commonly referred to as the Outer Hebrides) is an island chain off the west coast of Scotland, which encompasses 15 inhabited islands with a total population of 26,640. Much of the population is located on the isle of Lewis, which has 18,500 residents, with the main settlement on the isles being Stornoway on Lewis, which has a population of about 8,100. The Western Isles have historically been a very strong Scottish Gaelic (Gàidhlig) speaking area, with around 50% of the population being able to speak the language. The Western Isles football team represents the isles at the bi-annual Island Games football tournaments, having first competed at the 2005 tournament. To date, their best results at the tournament have been third-place finishes at both the 2005 & 2007 Island Games.
