Sudan is one of the oldest national teams in Africa and were one of three teams to compete in the inaugural Africa Cup of Nations in 1957. Their greatest achievement was winning the 1970 Africa Cup of Nations on home soil; however, they have achieved little success since then. From 1976 until 2008, they did not qualify for AFCON, yet in 2012 they saw a resurgence by making it through to the Quarter-Finals. Sudan have also performed well at the African Nations Championship, finishing 3rd in both the 2011 & 2018 CHAN tournaments. Sudan’s relatively strong domestic league has been somewhat of a hindrance for national team development with top players almost never leaving the local league to seek a higher level overseas, however this is beginning to change as a growing number of Sudanese footballers have signed with foreign clubs in recent years. Sudan returned to the African Cup of Nations in 2021, recording impressive victories against South Africa and Ghana to secure their first AFCON qualification since 2012.
Mohamed Ahmed Bashir (more commonly known as Muhamed Besha) enjoyed a distinguished playing career primarily in the Sudan Premier League. He began his professional journey with Al-Hurya SC (Omdurman) in the early 2000s before moving to Al-Mourada SC, where he featured from 2005 to 2009, and then establishing himself as a key player for Sudan’s powerhouse club Al-Hilal from 2010 until his retirement in 2019, scoring over 60 goals for the club and winning multiple domestic titles. During his time with Al-Hilal he also had a loan spell at Saudi Arabian club Al-Wehda in the 2012–13 season. Internationally, Bashir was capped nearly fifty times for the Sudan national team between 2007 and 2018, contributing goals and experience in continental competitions, most notably scoring both goals for Sudan in their 2-2 draw against Angola at the 2012 Africa Cup of Nations.
