Jean-Michel Fontaine is arguably the highest-profile footballer to represent Réunion at international level in recent years. He is one of the few Réunionnaise internationals to play outside of the region, having had a brief spell in England with League One club Fleetwood Town in 2013. His national team record is impressive, having scored 15 goals in 26 matches since debuting in 2007.
Réunion is not FIFA member and is only an associate member of CAF, with their participating in international football mostly limited to competing in the Indian Ocean Island Games every four years. Despite their lack of regular international matches, they have fared well at the Games, winning the Championship in 4 occasions including the most recent tournament in 2015.
