Benfica de Macau is one of Macau's most successful football clubs, tracing its origins to 1951 as an overseas affiliate of Portuguese giants SL Benfica. Revived in its modern form in 2008, the club rapidly climbed through Macau's football divisions, reaching the top flight in 2012 and establishing a period of dominance with five consecutive Liga de Elite championships between 2014 and 2018, before claiming a sixth title in 2024. Benfica also won three Macau FA Cups and made history in 2018 by becoming the first Macanese club to reach the AFC Cup group stage, recording four victories in six matches, including a memorable away win against Hwaepul SC in North Korea. Beyond football, Benfica de Macau holds cultural and political significance as an enduring symbol of Macau's Portuguese colonial heritage, maintaining a visible connection to Portugal more than two decades after the territory's 1999 handover to China.
