Iraq has always had a relatively strong national team despite their recent history of political instability. Their 2007 AFC Asian Cup triumph has been described as one of football's greatest fairy tale victories, with the team managing to eliminate competitors with far greater preparation and resources on their way to the title, bringing joy and unity to the people of their war-torn nation. They have qualified for the FIFA World Cup once in 1986 and have progressed past the group stages in almost every one of their Asian Cup appearances. After limited success following their 2007 Asian Cup title, Iraq’s recent performances have been promising, led by a young national team squad featuring a large number of European-based players as well as the developing domestic league. With Iraq now having a mostly stable political situation, there is a renewed hope that their current squad can lead them to a second FIFA World Cup appearance in the coming years.
