Georgia’s national team played their first international match in 1990, at a time when they were still part of the Soviet Union. Following their secession in April 1991, Georgia then began to formalize their football system as an independent state and became a member of both UEFA & FIFA in 1992. They have competed at every World Cup and Euro qualification campaign since Euro 1996, however are yet to reach their maiden major tournament. Despite this, they have maintained a competitive national team over the years and have shown significant progress in recent qualification campaigns. This was highlighted by their performance in the UEFA Euro 2020 qualifiers, in which they reached the final play-off match, where they suffered a heartbreaking home defeat to North Macedonia in the decisive match and thus missed the opportunity to make a historic debut in a major competition.
Tornike Okriashvili is one of the leading players in the current Georgia national team squad and has played his club football in a number top-tier European leagues. He began his career with local side FC Gagra in 2009, where he impressed in his one season with the senior team. He then moved to Ukraine, initially signing with Shakhtar Donetsk and later joining Illichivets Mariupol & Chornomorets Odesa. In 2014, Okriashvili joined Belgian giants KRC Kenk, where he spent two seasons before having spells with Turkish Süper Lig club Eskişehirspor, Russian Premier League club FC Krasnodar and eventually in Cyprus with Anorthosis and APOEL. At international level, Okriashvili has been one of Georgia’s most prominent goalscorer over the past decade, with 13 goals in 50 matches, placing him as their 6th all-time top goalscorer.
