This is an AMS Clothing Eritrea national team 2015-16 home jersey featuring the number of star striker Henok Goitom.
Since joining FIFA officially in 1998 Eritrean football has faced many difficulties yet have always been a competitive side when making it onto the field. The main issue over the past decade has been the regularly absconding by Eritrean players seeking asylum when playing overseas. Eritrea’s most recent official match was in 2015, with ten players refusing to return home from the away match against Botswana. Eritrea finally returned to international football in 2019 and have achieved some very positive results, including reaching the 2019 CECAFA Cup final.
Goitom is Eritrea’s most prominent footballer and has had a long career playing throughout some of Europe’s top leagues, predominantly in Spain’s La Liga and also with Swedish giants AIK. After representing Sweden at youth level, In September 2015, at age of 30, Goitom made an official request to FIFA for permission to play for Eritrea. He won his first cap on 10 October, in a 0–2 home loss to Botswana for the 2018 FIFA World Cup qualifiers; he scored in the return leg, to a final 1–5 defeat on aggregate.
