Leones Vegetarianos Fútbol Club compete in Equatorial Guinea’s Liga Nacional de Fútbol and are based in the capital city of Malabo. Leones Vegetarianos translates as the ‘vegetarian lions’ and were founded in 2000 by Spaniard Juan Manuel Rojas, a vegetarian man from Granada who arrived in Equatorial Guinea in 2001 and years later went to India, where he staged a hunger strike. The club have recently established themselves as a powerhouse in Equatorial Guinean football, winning their first trophy in 2014 after defeating Deportivo Mongomo in the final of the Copa de Su Excelencia. Vegetarianos then won their first league title in 2017 and won it again in 2018 before finishing 2nd to rivals Cano Sport in the 2018-19 season.
Jimmy Bermúdez is the highest-profile profile in the current Leones Vegetarianos squad and has had a prolific club career mostly playing throughout South and Central America. The 37-year-old was born in Colombia and initially played for several local clubs before moving to Ecuador and Mexico. His longest spell was with Ecuadorian top tier club LDU Loja from 2012-16. His move to Leones Vegetarianos in 2019 marks his return to Equatorial Guinea, after he controversially represented their national team in four international matches in 2013 & 2014 despite not being of Equatorial Guinean descent nor having ever travelled to the country. FIFA soon ruled that he was ineligible to play for their national team along with several other South American footballers to play for Equatorial Guinea. Previously, Bermúdez had played for the Colombian U-20 national team, starting every match in the 2007 South American U-20 Championship.
