American Samoa are perhaps best known for suffering the greatest defeat in the history of international football when they lost 31-0 to Australia in April 2001. After years of heavy defeats, they finally broke through with their first international victory after 30 consecutive defeats when they won 2-1 against Tonga in 2011. Goals to Ramin Ott and Shalom Luani secured the victory, which was then followed by a draw against Cook Islands. In 2015, they continued the momentum, recording victories against Tonga and Cook Islands, which lifted them to an all-time high FIFA ranking of 164 in October 2015. After not playing in four years, largely due to the global pandemic, American Samoa returned to international football at the 2023 Pacific Games, where they lost all four group stage matches with a young squad comprising of many teenagers and debutants. American Samoa has largely struggled to be competitive due to their small population, lack of regular fixtures as well as competition with other sports such as American football and baseball. With other national teams in the region looking to draw upon their overseas diaspora to improve the quality of their squads, it is possible that American Samoa could look to call-up players based in the United States, which would give the team a massive boost.
