Akhmedov is one of Uzbekistan’s greatest ever footballers, with the 31-year-old having had a distinguished career at both club and international level. He began his club career with Uzbekistan Super League giants Pakhtakor Tashkent, where his brilliant performances attracted attention from a number of European clubs. Akhmedov eventually signed for Russian club Anzhi Makhachkala and later continued his career in Russian with FC Krasnador. In 2017, he transferred to emerging Chinese Super League club Shanghai SIPG and was a key member of the SIPG squad that won the 2018 league title. He has been his nation’s most prominent footballer in the recent period of success, and was particularly impressive in the 2011 AFC Asian Cup as Uzbekistan finished fourth overall. He currently stands as Uzbekistan’s sixth most-capped player and also their sixth all-time leading scorer.
Uzbekistan have established themselves as the most successful national team in Central Asia since their first international match as an independent nation in 1992. Although the ‘White Wolves’ have never qualified for a FIFA World Cup, they have qualified for every AFC Asian Cup since 1996, where they have progressed past the group stages in the past five tournaments. At youth level, they have qualified for the U-17 World Cup and U-20 World Cup in recent years, and with a number of young players coming through their ranks, there is a strong chance that an appearance at the World Cup in not far away for Uzbekistan.
