In addition to almost qualifying for the 2018 World Cup, Syria have qualified for the Asian Cup 7 times, most recently for the upcoming 2023 tournament, and also won the West Asian Football Federation Championship in 2012. In recent years Syria has been applauded for achieving solid results and presenting a unifying face for the country in the midst of an ongoing civil conflict. The team have not hosted a game in Syria since December 2010, with their home matches being played in a range of other countries. Since around 2022, there have been a growing number of players from the Syrian diaspora in Europe and South America being called up to the national team as they look to develop a new generation of talent following their recent 'Golden Generation.'
