The Romania national football team played its first match in 1922 and is one of only four national teams to have taken part in the first three World Cups, the other three being Brazil, France, and Belgium. Overall, they have played in seven World Cups, most recently in 1998. They have also competed in four European Championships, most recently in 2016. The team's most successful period was in the 1990s when, led by the legendary Gheorghe Hagi, they reached the quarterfinals of the 1994 World Cup. They also reached the last 16 of the 1998 World Cup, and the quarter-finals of Euro 2000.
Ianis Hagi is the son of Gheorghe Hagi, the greatest footballer in Romanian history and was one of the world’s top players in the 1990s, having played for European giants Real Madrid, Barcelona and Galatasaray. Ianis Hagi is yet to reach the massive heights of his father, however he has become one of the leading players in the current generation of Romanian football and a key player for the Romania national team. Ianis began his senior club career in 2014 with Romanian Liga I side FC Viitorul Constanța, the club founded and owned by his father. After two seasons in Romania he signed with Seria A club Fiorentina, however struggled to make their first team and later returned to Viitorul Constanța the following season. He spent two further seasons at the club, where he performed strongly and was signed by Belgian giants KRC Genk in July 2019 for €4 million. He subsequently joined Rangers in the Scottish Premiership, where he has now spent the past 3 ½ seasons and displayed his immense potential despite several injury setbacks. At international level, Ianis has won 26 caps for Romania since his debut for the national team in 2018.
