Since the team was established in 2011, Mbeya City have quickly generated huge local support and have consistently achieved solid results in the Tanzania Premier League. Based in Mbeya in the Southern Highlands of southwest Tanzania, the club is one of the most supported with their dedicated fans often filling the Sokoine Stadium to full capacity to support the Purple Tigers.

Mrisho Ngasa is arguably one of the greatest players in Tanzanian football history and is the all-time leading scorer for the Tanzania national team with 25 goals in 100 matches. He has played for all three of the powerhouse teams in Tanzania, which are Azam, Simba and Young Africans as well as spells in South Africa, Oman and a brief stint at the Seattle Sounders in the MLS. In 2017 he made a shock move to Mbeya City, a relative minnow in comparison to the clubs he had previously played for. Ngasa made an instant impact at Mbeya, further increasing their fanbase and cementing his spot as one of the top strikers in Tanzania.
