Kazakhstan joined FIFA in 1992, the year after their independence from the Soviet Union and were a member of the Asian Football Confederation until 2002 when they joined UEFA. Despite often struggling against their world-class European opponents Kazakhstan have showed signs of progress in the past decade, reaching an all-time high FIFA ranking of 83 in 2016. Kazakhstan’s domestic league has also improved considerably in recent years, with their clubs regularly competing in the UEFA Europa League group stages.

Bakhtiyar Zaynutdinov (spelt as Zainutdinov in Kazakh) is one of the leading players in the current generation of Kazakh football, having displayed impressive performances at both club & international level in recent years. The 24-year-old developed through the youth ranks of his hometown club FC Taraz and he made his Kazakhstan Premier League debut for their senior team in 2017. After immediately become a key player for the team in his first season, scoring 7 goals in 27 matches, Zaynutdinov was signed by Kazakh giants Astana in 2018, where his performances in their Europa League campaign attracted the attention of clubs throughout Europe. After just one season with Astana, Zaynutdinov was signed by Russian Premier League club FC Rostov in January 2019 and continued with development in 2 ½ seasons with the club before signing with CSKA Moscow in 2020. At international level, Zaynutdinov has quickly become a vital member of the Kazakhstan squad, having scored 9 goals in 23 matches since his debut in 2018, already placing him as the 3rd top goalscorer in the history of the national team.
