Iran has consistently been of the top national teams in Asia and has been the highest-ranked team in Asia for the majority of the past decade. They are regular World Cup participants, having qualified 7 times including the past 4 editions and have won the AFC Asian Cup three times- in 1968, 1972 & 1976. In recent years they have continued their regional dominance, however have been unable to add to their Asian Cup tally despite making it to at least the Quarter-Finals in almost every edition of the tournament.
