Hilal El Obied SC compete in the Sudanese Premier League and are based in El-Obied, the capital city of the North Kordofan state. The club was founded in 1931 and are one of the oldest clubs in Sudan as well as arguably the most popular in the country outside the 2 Omdurman-based giants of Al-Hilal and Al-Merrikh. Despite their long history, they are yet to win a major title and until recently have mostly been fighting against relegation in the top tier or competing in the second tier. In recent years, they have emerged as a force in Sudanese football following their promotion to the Premier League for the 2015 season after 12 seasons in the Second Division. They finished in 6th place in 2015 and have consistently been a top 4 team since then, earning qualification for 4 of the past 5 CAF Confederation Cup tournaments. In the 2017 CAF Confederation Cup, they achieved their best-ever result, reaching the quarter-finals after shock wins against Zambia’s ZEXSCO United and Egyptian club Smouha. The closest the club has come to winning a major trophy has been in the Sudan Cup, where they finished runners-up in both 2016 & 2018.
