FC Bijagós compete in the Campeonato Nacional da Guiné-Bissau, the top tier of football in Guinea-Bissau and are based in Bubaque, one of the major towns in the Bijagós Islands. The clubs’ full name is Tubarões Futebol Clube dos Bijagós, with tubarões being Portuguese for "sharks.” It is one of the two major clubs of the Bijagós Archipelago, the other is EN Bolama, who are based in Bolama, the other major town of the Bijagós. The Bijagós Islands are a group of about 88 islands and islets located in the Atlantic Ocean off the coast of Guinea-Bissau, with their language and culture being distinct from that of the mainland. The population of around 30,000 has a considerable degree of autonomy and has shielded its ancestral culture from outside influence, operating essentially without any authority from the government of Guinea-Bissau. FC Bijagós first entered the national league in 2002 and have regularly competed in the top-tier since then, however have regularly struggled to compete in a league that is dominated by well-resourced clubs based in Bissau.
