This is a Puma Erbil SC 2019-20 home jersey featuring the number of star striker Sherko Karim.
Erbil Sports Club compete in the Iraqi Premier League and are based in the city of Erbil in Iraq’s Kurdistan Region. Erbil SC are the most successful team to come from Iraqi Kurdistan and have established themselves over the past 20 years as one of Iraq’s strongest clubs. They were formed in 1968 and spent many years in mid-table obscurity, only occasionally challenging the top Iraqi sides. Around the beginning of the Iraq War in 2003, Erbil FC dramatically improved to become a real powerhouse in Iraqi club football. Top players from southern Iraq started joining the club, where they could be offered good wages and relative safety. This led to Erbil winning their first league title in the 2006-07 season and repeating this achievement in the 2007-08, 2008-09 and 2011-12 season. The club has also achieved some success at continental level, finishing runners-up in both the 2012 and 2014 AFC Cup.
Sherko Karim is one of the top players to have emerged from the Kurdistan Region in the modern era. He begain his youth career with local club Kirkuk FC before joining Baghdad-based powerhouse Al-Shorta, where he made his senior club debut in 2012 at age 16. After impressing at Al-Shorta and also for Iraq’s youth national teams, Karim signed for Swiss giants Grasshopper Club Zürich in 2015. He struggled to make regular first-team appearances in Europe and after loan spells with FC Vaduz and Austria’s Rheindorf Altach, he returned to Iraq in 2019. Karim initially joined former club Al-Shorta before returing ti Kurdistan to sign with Erbil SC in early 2020. At international level, Karim has represented Iraq’s U17, U20 and U23 national teams before finally debuting for the senior national team in a match against the UAE in January 2021.
