This is a Joma Cuba national team 2023 home jersey featuring the name and number of star midfielder and captain Aricheell Hernández.
Cuba’s national team have a proud history, with their first major success being reaching the Quarter-Finals of the 1938 FIFA World Cup. Although they have not returned to the World Cup since then, Cuba have remained a relatively strong team, regularly qualifying for the CONCACAF Gold Cup, where they have reached the Quarter-Finals three times (in 2003, 2013 & 2015). Cuba have also had success at the Caribbean Cup, having won the 2012 edition and finishing in the top four in every tournament they have competed in. Cuba would have surely achieved greater results if not for the defection of many of their top players to the United States, some of which are playing in the MLS. Despite being less consistent in the past few years, the policy of the Asociación de Fútbol de Cuba against selecting foreign-based players was finally scrapped in 2021, leading to the top local players in Cuba being able to sign for overseas clubs and members of the Cuban diaspora becoming eligible to represent the national team.
Aricheell Hernández is one of the leading players in the current generation of Cuban football and has been one of the very few players to move abroad from the Cuban domestic league since the Cuban government first allowed this in 2016. Hernández was born in the village of Zulueta, which is considered the birthplace of football in Cuba and began his senior club career with his provincial team Villa Clara in 2010. In his 7 seasons at Villa Clara, the club won the Campeonato Nacional de Fútbol de Cuba title 4 times, with Hernández becoming arguably the leading midfielder in Cuban domestic football during this period. After attracting strong interest from top clubs throughout the region, Hernández eventually signed with Panamanian giants C.A. Independiente in 2017, where he won the league title in his single season at the club. He then joined O&M FC in the Dominican Republic, performing strongly over a 4 season spell before being singed by Guatemalan Liga Nacional club Deportivo Mixco in 2022. In 2024, he returned to the Dominican Republic, signing with emerging club Atlético Pantoja. At international level, Hernández has scored 9 goals in 41 matches for the Cuban national team since his debut in 2012.
