This is a Joma Cuba national team 2021-22 away jersey featuring the name and number of star winger Onel Hernández.
Cuba’s national team have a proud history, with their first major success being reaching the Quarter-Finals of the 1938 FIFA World Cup. Although they have not returned to the World Cup since then, Cuba have remained a relatively strong team, regularly qualifying for the CONCACAF Gold Cup, where they have reached the Quarter-Finals three times (in 2003, 2013 & 2015). Cuba have also had success at the Caribbean Cup, having won the 2012 edition and finishing in the top four in every tournament they have competed in. Cuba would have surely achieved greater results if not for the defection of many of their top players to the United States, some of which are playing in the MLS.
Onel Hernández is arguably the highest-profile Cuban footballer of the modern era and is the first Cuban-born English Premier League player. Hernández moved to Germany when he was 6 years old and came up through the youth ranks of Bundesliga club Arminia Bielefeld. He debuted for the Arminia Bielefeld senior team in 2010, however he left the club in 2012 to join the reserve team of Werder Bremen, who were competing in Germany’s fourth tier. Hernández developed quickly at Bremen and later joined the reserve team of Vfl Wolfburg in 2014 before signing with 2. Bundesliga club Eintracht Braunschweig prior to the 2016-17 season. After an impressive 1 ½ seasons with Braunschweig, Hernández moved to EFL Championship club Norwich City, becoming a fan favorite and playing a key role in their title-winning 2019-20 season, which saw the club promoted to the Premier League. Despite showing a desire to represent Cuba at international level for many years, Hernández was unable to play for the national team due to their policy against selecting foreign-based players. This policy was finally scrapped in 2021, allowing Hernández to make his debut for Cuba in their 2022 World Cup qualifying campaign and he has since scored 2 goals in 4 matches for the ‘Leones del Caribe.’
