The Azerbaijan national team was established following the country’s independence from the Soviet Union, playing its first match in 1992 before AFFA joined FIFA and UEFA in 1994. Since then, Azerbaijan have competed regularly in FIFA World Cup and UEFA European Championship qualifying, although they are yet to reach the finals of a major senior tournament. The team has nevertheless produced a number of memorable results, including victories over established European opposition such as Sweden, Finland and Turkey, while its 2018 World Cup qualifying campaign was among its strongest, yielding three victories and ten points. Azerbaijan reached a record high of 73rd in the FIFA World Ranking and, despite remaining one of UEFA’s smaller national sides, continue to develop their footballing identity, with several well-resourced Azerbaijani clubs beginning to make an impact in European competition.
