The Azerbaijan national team was established following the country’s independence from the Soviet Union, playing its first match in 1992 before AFFA joined FIFA and UEFA in 1994. Since then, Azerbaijan have competed regularly in FIFA World Cup and UEFA European Championship qualifying, although they are yet to reach the finals of a major senior tournament. The team has nevertheless produced a number of memorable results, including victories over established European opposition such as Sweden, Finland and Turkey, while its 2018 World Cup qualifying campaign was among its strongest, yielding three victories and ten points. Azerbaijan reached a record high of 73rd in the FIFA World Ranking and, despite remaining one of UEFA’s smaller national sides, continue to develop their footballing identity, with several well-resourced Azerbaijani clubs beginning to make an impact in European competition.

Mahir Emreli is arguably Azerbaijan’s most successful footballing exports, being one of the few footballers from his country to make a major impact outside of the domestic league. He rose to prominence with Qarabağ, scoring prolifically as the club dominated Azerbaijani football, winning five consecutive league titles and finishing as the Premier League’s top scorer in both 2018–19 and 2019–20. Emreli moved abroad with Legia Warsaw in 2021, scoring 11 goals in 33 appearances across all competitions, before spells with Croatian giants Dinamo Zagreb, Turkey’s Konyaspor, and German sides Nürnberg and Kaiserslautern. He enjoyed a particularly productive 2024–25 2. Bundesliga season with Nürnberg, scoring 11 times in 25 appearances, and in 2026 joined Polish club Raków Częstochowa on loan. A senior Azerbaijan international since 2017, he has made 61 appearances for his country and remains a key figure in Azerbaijan’s attack.
