Armée Patriotique Rwandaise FC (usually referred to as APR) compete in the Rwanda Premier League and are based in Rwanda’s capital Kigali. The club was founded in 1993 as the team of the Rwandese Patriotic Front, the ruling political party in the country. Ever since the club was formed, they have been one of the strongest in Rwanda, winning the league title a record 18 times and also the Rwandan Cup a record 14 times. Since 2000 the club has won the league title in 15 out of 21 seasons, with rivals Rayon Sports being their only major challenger throughout this period. At continental level, APR regularly appear in the early stages of CAF competitions, however they have never achieved any notable success except for a semi-final finish in the 2003 African Winners’ Cup, where they defeated Ghanaian giants Asante Kotoko in the quarter-finals.
