Despite often struggling against their world-class European opponents Kazakhstan have showed signs of progress in the past decade, reaching an all-time high FIFA ranking of 83 in 2016. Kazakhstan’s domestic league has also improved considerably in recent years, with their clubs regularly competing in the UEFA Europa League group stages.

Bauyrzhan Islamkhan is one of Kazakhstan’s highest-profile footballers and has had a prolific career at club & international level. He has played the majority of his club football in the Kazakhstan Premier League and began his career at his hometown club FC Taraz in 2011, where his impressive performances earned him a national team call-up as well as being signed by Russian Premier League side Kuban Krasnodar in 2012. He soon returned to Kazakhstan, firstly to Astana on loan and then was permanently signed by FC Kairat in 2014. At Kairat he quickly realized his enormous potential and in his six seasons at the club he became one of the league’s top players, having a role in the clubs’ four Kazakhstan Cup title victories in 2014, 2015, 2017 & 2018. In 2020, he was signed by UAE powerhouse Al-Ain, where he will look to continue his rise at one of Asia’s strongest clubs. At international level, Islamkhan has played 46 matches since his debut for Kazakhstan in 2012 and was recently given the national team captaincy.
