Al-Masry compete in the Egyptian Premier League and are based in Port Said, the fifth-largest city in Egypt. The club are one of oldest in Egypt and were formed in 1920 by a group of Egyptians aiming at asserting the national identity of the people of the city after the Egyptian Revolution of 1919. The club were one of the founders of the Egyptian Football Association in 1921 and has participated in the Egyptian Premier League since its inception in 1948. Despite their long history, Al-Masry have never won the league title, with their highest finish being in 3^rd place on 6 occasions. Their sole major title was the 1998 Egypt Cup, a competition they have competed in since 1921 and finished runners-up 9 times. Their breakthrough title victory in 1998 was in a thrilling 4-3 win against El Mokawloon, with the club reaching the final most recently in 2017, where they lost 2-1 against Zamalek after conceding 2 goals in the last few minutes of the 2^nd period of extra-time.

Ahmed Gomaa has been one of Al-Masry’s leading strikers since joining the club in 2014. The 33-year-old began his senior career in 2008 with Egyptian Premier League club Ghazl El Mahalla after spending the previous four seasons in their reserve team. After a lack of opportunities, he signed with 2^nd tier club El Raja in 2009, however his breakthrough came with fellow 2^nd tier club El Mansoura, where he performed strongly in a 3-season stint from 2011-2014. This led to Gomaa being signed by Al-Masry in July 2014 and he has consistently been their top scorer throughout his time at the club. Gomaa’s strong form at club level led to his first call-up to the Egyptian national team in 2017 and he has since won 5 caps for his country.
