Desportivo Militar 6 De Setembro compete in the São Tomé Island League and are based in Santana, a town on the eastern coast of São Tomé Island. The club is operated by the Armed Forces of São Tomé and Príncipe, with their name commemorating the annual Armed Forces Day held on September 6^th, which is a public holiday celebrated with military parades. 6 De Setembro has been competing in the top tiers of football São Tomé and Príncipe since the league was first established in 1977, with their greatest achievements being winning the league & cup double in 1988 as well as their most recent cup title in 2010. Over the past decade, they have been relegated to as low as the third tier, however, have managed to work their way back to the top flight after finishing 2^nd in the 2017 Second Division season.
